Still here and plugging away!

March 19, 2012 1 comment

You know that you’ve neglected your blog when you have to take a look at the stats to remember the last time you posted anything!  The reason behind my extended absence is nothing more than my own preoccupation with a project I am working on for PTO at my son’s school.  So, while I’ve been on the Internet a lot (a LOT) these past weeks, the only blogs I’ve read have been technical in nature.  I can tell you, they certainly aren’t as fun and interesting as all of you guys 🙂

The weight loss is still going strong(?) and I actually lost a few pounds after a plateau around 316-317  for a while.  On Saturday the scale read 313 so if I want to achieve my goal of getting to 300 by May 1 I better get cracking.

Just a quick check-in post.  It’s funny, but I definitely feel better about my weight loss efforts when I post (and read other blogs) regularly.  My project should be done soon, so I’ll be able to get back to things in a few weeks!

FMM: Travel

February 20, 2012 6 comments

It has been a while since I’ve posted anything and I’ve been purposefully staying away from my blog.  The reason?  I know I’ve been eating poorly and I haven’t wanted to be accountable for that.  Since today is Monday (Friend Makin’ Monday), I thought it would be a good way to get back on the horse (so to speak) and be more committed to sharing the good and the bad in my journey to lose weight.  That’s a topic for tomorrow though – tonight, it is on to this week’s topic: travel.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

FMM: Travel

  1. Where did your most recent trip take you?  That depends if we’re talking about a weekend trip or an airplane trip!  The last weekend trip we took (other than this weekend’s trip back to my hometown, which we do regularly), was to Chicago.  The last airplane trip we took was to Philadelphia.
  2. Is there a place that you’d like to visit that you haven’t yet?  If so, where?  If I were more comfortable with long flights, I would love to go to Greece or Italy some day.
  3. Do you travel lightly, or do you cram as much into your luggage as possible?  I tend to cram a lot – I just want to be prepared for anything you know?
  4. Do your eating and exercise habits change when you travel? If so, how?  Yeah, unfortunately they do.  When I travel I still try to exercise if at all possible.  Usually if traveling for work I’m so exhausted after a long day that I don’t, but if I can make my days a little shorter then I’ll use the recumbent bike at the hotel.  In terms of eating, I’m pretty awful.  I have big meals (to make up for the fact that I’m missing my family) and tend to “snack” a lot out of boredom and loneliness.
  5. Tell us about a place you’ve been that you’d like to go back to.  Niagara Falls was beautiful.  I’m sure it is a huge cliche to say that, but it really was!
  6. Do you prefer to travel at a certain time of year?  I prefer traveling in the spring or the fall.  I don’t like winter because of the chances for ice/snow and don’t like summer because it can be too hot to be out and about.
  7. If you had to choose, would you go to the beach or the mountains?  Mountains.  Hands down.  Preferably in a cabin/house with an outdoor hot tub.
  8. Have you ever needed a passport to travel?  No.
  9. Do you collect anything in your travels? When we go to museums and things as a family we bring back a magnet for our refrigerator.
  10. Where do you plan to go next?  We’re going to Philadelphia this summer and hope to take a couple days to go out to Washington D.C.

FMM: Habits

February 6, 2012 4 comments

I look forward to Friend Makin’ Mondays as a way to get my mind out of the negative places that it sometimes goes.  And that’s exactly what I need today!  If you haven’t done this before, the idea is that you answer these questions on your own blog, then visit Kenlie’s blog All The Weigh and link up in the comments.  It is a neat way to meet other bloggers with similar interests!  And now, my answers…

FMM: Habits

  1. Are you proactive, or do you procrastinate?  It really depends on the task at hand.  If it is something that I really want to do (like going on vacation with the family), I’m way proactive.  I can definitely plan things many, many months in advance!  Other things (like making doctors appointments) I definitely procrastinate.
  2. Do you eat breakfast everyday? If so, what’s a typical meal like? I eat breakfast every morning and it is almost always the same – a Fiber One bar (chocolate or peanut butter) and a coffee sweetened with sugar-free syrup and fat free half and half.  Occasionally on a weekend, I might have an Egg McMuffin (no canadian bacon) or a whole grain bagel from Panera (yum!)
  3. How much time do you spend watching TV on an average day?  Oh gosh – maybe 2-3 hours or so?  I definitely have several shows that I love watching and they help me relax.  Lately my DH and I have been watching an episode or two of Big Bang Theory on DVD before bed.  Funny show!
  4. Do you talk on the phone, or do you prefer e-mail and/or text messages?  I really dislike email, because I have to deal with so much of it at work.  So I’d much rather talk on the phone.  I’m not a big talker, so it’s all good!
  5. Do you exercise in the morning, afternoon or evening? Always in the evening.  I really wish I could force myself to get up early in the morning and exercise but it just isn’t me.
  6. Do you take time for yourself regularly? Oh definitely.  I have a really sweet DH that helps me make sure that I have time for myself to take a bath or do some crafting or things like that.  Watching the awful TV shows I watch is my guilty alone time pleasure.
  7. How often do you make your bed? Right before bed.
  8. Do you plan meals? If so, how far in advance? I plan the upcoming week’s meals on Friday night or Saturday sometime.  I use this cool website called Plan to Eat.  It stores recipes, lets me plan out a week (or more) and then makes a shopping list.  Pretty cool.
  9. Do you wake up at the same time everyday? Usually 7:00am during the week and 8:00am on Sunday.  On Saturday, anything goes – from 8:00-9:30ish!
  10. How often do you brush your teeth?  In the morning and before bed.

FMM: Makeup Favorites

January 30, 2012 4 comments

Today is Friend Makin’ Monday (FMM) and since I’m way behind on my blog reading, I’m just going to do this quick post and then go do some reading!  (Plus, I got The Help from Redbox last night and I have to finish it up to return tonight!)  Want to play along?  Just copy the questions below to your own blog and give your answers.  Then visit and link up in the comments.  Easy peasy!

FMM: Makeup Favorites

1.  Do you wear makeup everyday? I wear the basics to work every day.  On the weekend if I’m just running errands I usually don’t.

2.  Does your routine change if you’re going out with friends/on a date/to a party? It depends on what we’re doing.  If I’m going out to dinner with my husband, then I add mascara, sometimes a little eyeliner, and lip gloss.

3.  Are you loyal to one brand, or do you use different brands for different things? For makeup I’m pretty loyal to one brand (Bare Escentuals), simply because I found it works for me and I can’t be bothered to mess around with trying other brands!  I never really learned how to apply makeup so having to pick it out is more of a nightmare than a fun experience.

4.  Do you wear primer/concealer? If so, what’s your favorite kind?  Well, I use the Bare Escentuals foundation as concealer.  Plus there is this eye brightening stuff I use under my eyes a lot of days.  See how much I know about makeup?  I refer to “eye brightening stuff”.

5.  What’s your favorite brand of foundation? Bare Escentuals

6.  Do you use blush and/or bronzer?  Not on a regular basis.  If I do, then it is….Bare Escentuals.  I apply it with an extremely light hand because I don’t look right with a lot of makeup.

7.  Do you wear eye shadow/eye liner?  I usually wear eye shadow just to brighten my lids.  It is BE…one is some sort of eye primer and the other is an actual eye shadow.  I don’t know names or colors without looking at them.

8.  What’s your favorite kind of mascara?  Right now it is Clinique because I got it as a sample last time I bought my moisturizer.  I don’t typically wear mascara so a sample lasts me a while.

9.  Lipstick? Lip gloss? Both? Favorite? If I want to do something a little special for date night or something, I use lip gloss.  My favorite is one of the Buxoms by – you guessed it – Bare Escentuals.  Otherwise, Carmex.

10.  Do you wear nail polish regularly?  If so, share a few of your favorite brands/colors.  No.  I love looking at nail polish colors, but I am so bad at applying it that I wear it maybe once or twice a year.

11.  How do you remove your makeup at the end of the day?  Clinique liquid soap.

12.  Do you feel prettier when you’re wearing makeup?  To a certain point, yes.  The makeup I wear every day, plus the extra I add for special occasions makes me feel pretty.  But when I try to go all out, I feel more self-conscious than anything because I don’t look like me.  One time, I went to a Bare Escentuals store and they did the full treatment – fully made up for a night out…and my DH looked at me and even though he said I looked pretty, I could tell he wasn’t really into it!  Maybe it was the dichotomy of being in jeans/tshirt and yet fully made up…but I just don’t look right with a lot of makeup.  I prefer a more natural look.

13.  Do you have any beauty tips that you could pass along?  Well, I’m not the best one to ask!  The only thing I can think of is don’t smoke, drink plenty of water, and moisturize 🙂

FMM: Short Answers

January 23, 2012 2 comments

Today was a crazy day. A long day.  A frustrating day.  But, it is Friend Makin’ Monday and that makes me happy, so without further ado…  (If this is your first time seeing FMM, if you want to play along just copy these questions to your blog and give your own answers.  Then, visit and link up in the comments.  It is fun to read everyone’s answers!)

FMM: Short Answers

  1. Mac or PC? PC for sure.  I’m much more programming/data oriented than I am graphics oriented, so PC works best for what I do.
  2. Do you paint your own nails? When I do (maybe once a year), I paint my own.  I did get a manicure once.  I enjoy picking out nail polish more than I enjoy the actual act of painting my nails!
  3. Beach or mountains?  Mountains all the way.  DH and I didn’t honeymoon somewhere nice and warm – we decided to go to a cabin by a lake in the middle of October.  I’d much rather be cold and snuggly under blankets than hot and baking in the sun.
  4. What’s the title of the book you’re currently reading?  The Fire by James Patterson.  It is part of a trilogy(?) about a futuristic time with a dictator taking away freedom and imagination and a brother/sister wizard/witch duo fighting against the new order.  It is probably more of a young adult title, but I enjoy the series!
  5. Do you dance?  Only in the privacy of my own living room 🙂
  6. CNN or Fox News?  CNN, but I only watch it when I’m traveling for work.  I find it all too depressing.  Yes, that means that most of the time I am not up to date on world events!
  7. Do you ride a bicycle?  Only my recumbent bike.  I would really love to ride a real bike and am thinking that when I hit a certain weight I will get one.  I read recently about a bike that would support my weight, but it is like $1,000 – a big investment!
  8. Do you get a yearly flu shot?  Sometimes.
  9. Best movie you’ve seen in 2012?  I haven’t seen any movies in the theater in 2012.  We rented Mr. Popper’s Penguins a couple of weeks ago and that was quite funny!
  10. Do you prefer to workout at home or at the gym?  Home.  I haven’t worked out at a gym since college.
  11. Last airport you were in?  O’Hare on my way home from Philadelphia w/ my family.
  12. Married or single?  Married for almost 12 years.  Sometimes I can’t believe it has been so long!
  13. iPhone or Android? Android
  14. Do you prefer to be in pictures or taking pictures?  I prefer to take pictures – my favorite subject is my son.  But, I really want to be in more pictures with my family so that I have those memories preserved.
  15. Favorite brand of sneakers?  New Balance fit my feet so well!
  16. Do you like snow?  Like?  Try LOVE!  I don’t really like driving in it, but I love watching it fall and then playing in it!
  17. Do you have/want to have kids?  We have a 5 year old boy.  I’d love to have another child, but we’ll see if that’s in the cards.  It was an emotional roller coaster trying to have our son and if he’s our only miracle that is okay with me.  We hit the jackpot with him!
  18. Summer or Winter? I prefer Winter over Summer.  But I like Spring and Fall even better.
  19. Do you know how to swim?  Yeah, I was a fish when I was a kid.
  20. Do you prefer to shop in store or online?  I prefer shopping in a store so I can really see/touch things.

Have a great week!

FMM: Getting to Know You

January 9, 2012 4 comments

Long day and I’m exhausted.  Granted, we went to Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner, so my total calorie intake today was 1913 and I didn’t exercise.  So that probably just makes me even more tired.  I’ll have to pay attention to the way I feel after eating well and poorly.  Other people say it makes a noticeable difference and I’ve just never paid attention before!

Mondays are awesome because they’re Friend Makin’ Mondays.  If you’ve never done this before, all you need to do is post the answers to the questions below on your own blog, then head over to All The Weigh and link up in the comments.  Always a fun distraction for the start of the week!

FMM: Getting to Know You

1) What is one of your favorite ways to spend a Saturday? I just like hanging out with my family – watching movies, playing games, and things like that.  Even better are the times when I get to be with my “whole” family – my husband and son of course, plus my mom, my sister, her husband, and my nephew.

2) List your top three favorite TV shows.  Grey’s Anatomy, Revenge, Modern Family

3) Would you rather be in pictures or take them? I’d much rather take them.

4) Why do you blog? My blog is more like my own online journal.  I started doing it just to have a place to record how I was feeling, what I was eating, what my goals were, etc.  However, now that a couple of people actually read, I find that I get a lot of encouragement from their comments and support!

5) Share five websites that you visit regularly… – I love making cards and papercrafts – Every day I track my calorie intake and exercise – Newly addicted, yikes – Looking for recipes
lots of blogs about weight loss, crafting, and cooking

6) If you could have lunch with one person from your Twitter list who would it be? I don’t do Twitter.  Give me a break, I just signed up for Facebook last week!

7) List a few of your favorite snacks. Chocolate – hands down.  Swiss cheese.  Cashews.  Peanut butter and jelly on whole grain English muffin.

8 ) Do you have a pet? If so, what kind? We have two cats – they’re awesome and funny.

9) Which three material possessions would you struggle to live without? laptop, my card making supplies, Nook

10) What’s your favorite drink? Sprite Zero

11) Do you enjoy cooking? I’m starting to – it is fun exploring new recipes.  But I really love baking.

12) Do you have children? Yes, a wonderful 5 year old boy.

13) What are your favorite hobbies?  making cards/papercrafts, reading, fusing glass (though I need to make more time for it)

14) Would you consider yourself to be shy or outgoing? Incredibly shy.  I’ll make eye contact, smile, and say ‘hi’, but I’d prefer if you do the talking.

15) If you could change one thing about yourself, what would you change? For sure my weight – not just because of my appearance, but primarily to be healthier.  I’m tired of having a little ache and assuming the worst just because of my weight.

16) Who is your favorite actor/actress? Patrick Dempsey / Emily VanCamp (I think that’s her name – the main character on Revenge)

17) What’s the coolest thing you’ve done this week?  The week just started, so there’s not much to choose from!  Honestly, I’ve got nothing…

18) Do you live near your family or far from them? I live about 4 hours from my family, which can sometimes be a tremendous bummer.  We love spending time together.  But, we love where we live now and what we do for a living so I don’t see us moving anytime soon.  Maybe someday.

19) List three of your talents. Summarizing and synthesizing information, being a good Mom, and listening to people

20) What is your greatest attribute? The joy I can find in the little things in life.

FMM: Have You Ever…?

December 19, 2011 3 comments

This week’s Friend Makin’ Monday topic is “Have you ever…”  If you haven’t done this before, it is a fun way to take a break from your usual blogging topic(s) and learn about someone!  Just type the answers to these questions on your own blog, then link it up in the comments on the All The Weigh blog.  Enjoy!

FMM: Have You Ever?

1. …traveled outside of your home country?  If so, where?  I’ve only been out of the United States once, and that was to Niagara Falls, Canada.  DH and I took a road trip for our 5th wedding anniversary (in 2005) and I was about 8 weeks pregnant at the time, so we like to say that our son came with us, too!

2. …performed on stage in front of at least 1,000 people? If so, share some details!  Yikes, no!  I’ve performed in a concert band for maybe 200-300 people and have spoken in front of 100-200 people, but nowhere close to 1,000.  I think that would be a bit much for me!

3. …watched an episode of Jersey Shore?  Oh gawd, I’m ashamed to admit it but yes.  Back in late September I had this awful flu and found myself waking up around 2:30am, not able to fall back asleep.  So, I’d go downstairs and watch Jersey Shore.  It is sadly addicting, though not enough for me to have watched any more after that!

4. …baked a cake from scratch?  If so, what’s your specialty?  I have baked a cake from scratch, but haven’t done it since DS was born.  I do love to bake and this weekend spent hours baking Christmas cookies and assorted goodies.

5. …worked in a grocery store?  No, but I worked in a small “general store” in a resort area.

6. …dated someone who was your best friend first?  I’m married to him 🙂

7. …made a difference in someone’s life during Christmas?  In little ways, I hope that I have.

8. …been on TV?  Only when clips of high school volleyball games would make the local news.

9. …had cosmetic surgery? Nope – I’m afraid of surgery and even so, can’t think of anything that I’d really want to change about myself enough to go under the knife.

10. …learned a second language?  If so, what else do you speak? Well, I took Spanish for 2 years in high school and then for another 2 semesters in college.  I can read Spanish much better than I can speak it.  Before I had DS, I could also curse like a drunken sailor – so well, in fact, that it was almost like a second language.  I’ve since toned it down 🙂
